Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals real reason for exiting Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan’s Thalaivar 173 after 1.5 months work

Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals real reason for exiting Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan’s Thalaivar 173 after 1.5 months work

Filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj has finally spoken in detail about why he stepped away from Thalaivar 173, a much-awaited film that brings together Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. The director addressed the topic at a recent press conference in Chennai and cleared the air around many rumours that had been doing the rounds for months.

Lokesh explained that his exit was not sudden and not linked to the success or failure of his earlier films. Instead, it came down to creative differences and a difference in the kind of film everyone wanted to make.

Worked on the Film for 1.5 Months

Lokesh revealed that he spent around one and a half months developing the script for Thalaivar 173. During this time, he had several discussions with Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. As the talks progressed, it became clear that the senior actors were keen on a lighter, more relaxed film rather than a heavy action-driven one.

The director shared honestly that this shift in tone made him rethink his involvement. He said that while he respects both legends deeply, the genre they were moving towards was not something he personally felt excited about directing.

Genre Mismatch Led to the Decision

Lokesh Kanagaraj is known for intense, action-packed films like Kaithi and Vikram. He admitted that lighter films are not his natural strength. With Rajinikanth already gearing up for Jailer 2 and Kamal Haasan planning another action-heavy project with the Anbariv duo, Thalaivar 173 was shaping up differently.

Rather than forcing himself into a space he was not comfortable with, Lokesh felt it was better to step aside. He made it clear that the decision was mutual and respectful, with no bad blood involved.

Clearing Rumours Around Kaithi 2

During the same interaction, Lokesh also addressed rumours related to Kaithi 2. There were claims that the sequel was delayed due to salary-related issues. The director firmly denied this.

He clarified that the delay had nothing to do with money. Instead, it gave him time to revisit an old commitment with Mythri Movie Makers. This eventually led to his next big project with Allu Arjun, which is now one of his main focus areas.

No Competition With Atlee

Lokesh Kanagaraj also spoke about comparisons being drawn between him and filmmaker Atlee, especially since both are collaborating with Allu Arjun. He dismissed any talk of rivalry and said there is no competition between them.

According to Lokesh, both directors are focused on telling strong stories and contributing positively to Tamil cinema. He added that box office success for any good film is a win for the industry as a whole.

What’s Next for Thalaivar 173 and Lokesh Kanagaraj

After Lokesh Kanagaraj exit, Thalaivar 173 will now be directed by Cibi Chakravarthi. The film is being produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International.

On his own work front, Lokesh recently unveiled a teaser for his upcoming, yet-to-be-titled film with Allu Arjun. The project will feature music by Anirudh Ravichander and is expected to go on floors later this year. By opening up directly, Lokesh Kanagaraj has put an end to speculation and shown that creative honesty remains his top priority.
