With the release of Border 2, audiences have once again been taken back to the emotions of the iconic 1997 film Border. The spiritual sequel stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, and revisits themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and soldierhood. One element that instantly struck a chord was the return of the legendary song “Sandese Aate Hain”, now reimagined with new voices and lyrics.
The song has been sung by Sonu Nigam along with Arijit Singh, Diljit Dosanjh, and Vishal Singh, with new lyrics written by Manoj Muntashir. While the song keeps its original soul, it has also sparked a larger conversation about recreating classic music.
Sonu Nigam Reflects on His Long ‘Border’ Journey
In a recent video message, Sonu Nigam spoke openly about what Border means to him. He recalled attending the premiere of Border in 1997 and standing at the premiere of Border 2 in 2026, calling it a journey he never imagined would last so long.
Sonu shared that Border is not just a film franchise for him but a story rooted in real events and real soldiers. He explained that the film series is built on true stories of courage and victory, which is why the makers approached every aspect, including music, with sincerity and respect.

Responding to Javed Akhtar’s Strong Remark
The discussion around Border 2 music began after veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar criticised the trend of recreating old songs, calling it a sign of creative and intellectual bankruptcy. He also revealed that he chose not to write new lyrics for Sandese Aate Hain in the sequel.
Sonu Nigam addressed this remark calmly and respectfully. He agreed with Javed Akhtar’s broader point, saying that creating new songs is important and that relying too much on old music is not healthy for creativity. At the same time, he explained why Sandese Aate Hain could not be removed from Border 2.
“Sandese Aate Hain Is Border’s Uniform”
Using a simple yet powerful comparison, Sonu said, “If Border is a soldier, then Sandese Aate Hain is his uniform.” He explained that the song is deeply tied to the identity of the film and its emotional core. For him, imagining Border without that song feels incomplete.
He also spoke warmly about Javed Akhtar, referring to him as an elder and a guru, and made it clear that his response came from respect, not disagreement. Sonu added that new songs are equally important and highlighted Mitte Ke Bete as a meaningful addition from Border 2, dedicated to soldiers and the nation.
Music That Carries Emotion Forward
The music of Border 2 aims to balance nostalgia with freshness. Alongside Sandese Aate Hain, new songs like Ghar Kab Aaoge attempt to build an emotional connection with today’s audience. The background score supports both the action and emotional moments, keeping the patriotic tone intact.
