Jennette McCurdy Calls Teen Relationship Addictive

Former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy has spoken openly about a difficult relationship from her teenage years. In a recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she shared that she was only 17 or 18 years old when she started dating a man who was in his mid-30s. Jennette said the relationship happened while she was working on iCarly and left a deep emotional impact on her life. She described the experience as confusing and harmful, even though at the time it felt exciting and validating.

Jennette explained that the relationship began with small gestures that made her feel special. The older man spent time with her after work, watching movies and listening to music together. Even though she did not actually enjoy his interests, she pretended to like them because she wanted his attention. She later realized that she was changing herself to keep him interested, which slowly affected her self-worth and emotional health.

As the relationship continued, Jennette said it became emotionally exhausting. She felt pressured to always be available whenever he called and said she only saw him for short moments. This made her feel unimportant and replaceable. She also revealed that the man already had a live-in girlfriend, which added to the unhealthy nature of the relationship. Looking back, Jennette now understands that there was a serious power imbalance between them.

Jennette shared that she was raised Mormon and was homeschooled, which meant she was emotionally inexperienced. She had planned to wait until marriage for sex and did not feel ready for intimacy. However, the relationship slowly crossed boundaries. The man often framed his actions as respectful, but Jennette now sees that his words were manipulative and focused mainly on his own needs.

She described the relationship as “addictive,” explaining that the emotional highs and lows kept her stuck longer than she realized. The relationship ended around the time of her mother’s death in 2013. Writing about the experience in her upcoming novel Half His Age, releasing January 13, helped her process leftover anger. Jennette said writing gives her closure and helps her heal from past trauma.
