Sicario: Day of the Soldado is the sequel to the critically praised 2015 film Sicario. The story focuses on rising violence at the U.S.-Mexico border, where drug cartels are accused of smuggling terrorists into the United States. To stop the growing threat, a secret and dangerous mission is launched. Benicio del Toro returns as Alejandro Gillick, a mysterious and ruthless operative, while Josh Brolin reprises his role as government agent Matt Graver. Their mission quickly spirals out of control, leading to chaos and moral conflict.

The movie also features familiar faces like Jeffrey Donovan and Raoul Trujillo, along with new cast members including Isabela Merced, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener. Unlike the first film, which was directed by Denis Villeneuve, the sequel was directed by Stefano Sollima. While the tone remains dark and intense, the sequel leans more into action and military-style storytelling than the slow-burn tension of the original.

When it was released in theaters in 2018, Day of the Soldado received mixed to positive reviews. Critics praised its strong performances and stylish action but noted that it was less emotional and complex than the first movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 62% critic score. At the box office, it performed solidly, earning about $76 million worldwide against a budget of around $35–45 million.
