Ricky Gervais, the famous British comedian and co-creator of The Office, has released a new stand-up special on Netflix called Mortality. In this show, Gervais talks about comedy in today’s world and how it has changed over the last ten years. He says comedians are often second-guessing their jokes because many people find things offensive. He claims that he and other comedians have pushed back against this and continues to speak freely.
Ricky Gervais challenges virtue signalling in Netflix special
Filmed at the London Palladium, Gervais says that educated and privileged people often try to tell ordinary people what they can and cannot say or laugh at. He argues that comedy is important for everyone, especially working-class audiences. Gervais has faced criticism in the past for jokes in his previous specials, but he believes he has always stayed true to his style.

In Mortality, Gervais also talks about cancel culture. He explains that social media allows people to show themselves as “virtuous” without real proof and that this often leads to attacking others. He calls this “virtue signalling” and says it can be annoying when people act smug about morality. Gervais says that while he considers himself anti-racist, he sometimes uses extreme jokes to highlight ideas, even if they shock some audiences.
The comedian also shares stories from his time hosting the Golden Globes. He praises the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for never censoring his jokes. Gervais revealed that he once stopped himself from making a gag about Jason Momoa, showing that even he sometimes chooses not to cross certain lines. Despite this, he continues to use his comedy to challenge what he sees as over-sensitivity in modern society.
