Despite how emotional and romantic the scene appears, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have confirmed that Nancy and Jonathan are not engaged. According to Matt Duffer, the moment actually represents a breakup rather than a future together. The brothers explained that they had planned this ending for some time, feeling that Nancy’s journey needed to move in a different direction.
The Duffers shared that Nancy’s character needed independence and a chance to find herself outside of a long-term relationship that began in high school. While Nancy and Jonathan share a strong bond formed through shared trauma, the creators felt it was more realistic for her story to end with personal growth rather than marriage.
