Bronx rapper Kay Flock, whose real name is Kevin Perez, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. The sentencing took place on Tuesday after a long legal case involving gang-related violence. Although Perez was cleared of a first-degree murder charge earlier this year, the court found him guilty of several serious crimes, including racketeering conspiracy, attempted murder, and using a firearm during violent acts.

The case is linked to the killing of Hwascar Hernandez, who was shot and killed in Upper Manhattan on December 16, 2021. Perez was arrested and charged in February 2023. While the jury did not convict him of murder, they found strong evidence connecting him to violent criminal activities connected to a gang. The court ruled that his actions played a major role in spreading fear and violence in parts of New York City.
Prosecutors said Perez was a leader of a Bronx-based gang known as Sev Side, also called DOA. According to the government, the gang carried out multiple shootings against rival groups to control territory. They also claimed the gang made money through crimes like bank and wire fraud, which helped fund Perez’s music career. Officials stated that Perez used his fame as a rapper to threaten rivals and glorify violence in his songs.

Kay Flock became well known in the music world after releasing the drill song “Shake It” in April 2022, featuring Cardi B. The song gained huge attention, but it was released just months after he was charged in the shooting case. Prosecutors argued that his music often praised violence and mocked rivals, including people who had been injured or killed in gang conflicts.

During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman said Perez helped create and promote a culture of violence that caused serious harm to many people, including innocent bystanders. The judge described the damage as “immense.” Federal prosecutors also pointed to other attempted shootings connected to Perez between 2020 and 2021. With this sentence, the court sent a strong message about the consequences of mixing fame, violence, and criminal activity.
