James Gunn Says Supergirl Is Finally Allowed to Be Messy Like Male Superheroes Always Have

Supergirl is returning to the big screen, and this time her story will feel very different. Director James Gunn and actress Milly Alcock spoke about the new film at a special event in New York. Gunn explained that Supergirl will no longer be shown as a perfect, polished hero. Instead, she will be allowed to be “messy,” just like many male superheroes have been for years. This new approach excited fans and media, who also got an early look at the teaser trailer.

James Gunn Says Supergirl Can Finally Be Messy Too

The journey of this Supergirl movie has been long and complicated. Development started back in 2018, but the project faced many delays. The pandemic put everything on hold in 2020, and later the movie was cancelled and restarted when Warner Bros. Discovery changed leadership. Actress Sasha Calle was originally chosen to play Supergirl, even appearing in The Flash (2023), but the role eventually went to Milly Alcock. With the film now completed under director Craig Gillespie, fans are finally getting a first glimpse before its release on June 26.

According to the teaser, this version of Kara Zor-El is not the calm, ideal hero people expect. She is a young woman in her early twenties, dealing with personal struggles and emotional baggage. The story shows her as a universe-hopping adventurer who drinks too much on her birthday, gets into trouble, and ends up fighting for justice in an unexpected way. The script, based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, highlights her flaws, anger, and vulnerability.

At the event, Gunn pointed out that female superheroes are often written as too perfect, which makes them feel less human. But this Supergirl sees the world differently from Superman. In the teaser, she says, “He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.” This contrast sets up an exciting new character who is strong, emotional, and imperfect in relatable ways.

The event itself took place during a chaotic week for Hollywood, with news swirling about major studio sales and corporate changes. Despite the uncertainty, Gunn and producer Peter Safran remained confident. They believe this new direction for the DC Universe marks the beginning of a stronger and more exciting future. With Supergirl leading the way, fans can expect a fresh, bold chapter for DC films.
