Rowan Atkinson Reveals He Dislikes Mr. Bean, Calling Character Selfish, Self-Serving, and Anarchic Child

Rowan Atkinson, the famous British actor known worldwide for playing Mr. Bean, recently shared surprising thoughts about his iconic character. During a special screening of his Netflix show Man Vs Baby in London, Atkinson said that even though Mr. Bean is loved globally, he personally would not enjoy spending time with him. He described Mr. Bean as a “selfish, self-serving, anarchic child” who behaves in strange and unusual ways.

Rowan Atkinson Calls Mr. Bean Selfish, Anarchic Character

Atkinson explained that he finds Mr. Bean is entertaining as a character because he reminds him of how he behaved at around 10 years old, childish, curious, and a little selfish. However, he said he would never invite Mr. Bean to his own home because the character would cause chaos. Even though Atkinson does not like Mr. Bean as a person, he respects the character’s success and impact. Since first appearing in 1990, Mr. Bean has become one of the biggest comedy exports from the UK, reaching over 190 countries and gaining billions of views on YouTube.

The actor also compared Mr. Bean to his other well-known roles. He said many of the characters he has played over the years are not very pleasant. He mentioned Blackadder, who is sarcastic and negative, and Johnny English, who he called vain and charmless. Atkinson said his new character, Trevor Bingley, from Man Vs Baby, is one of the nicest and kindest characters he has ever portrayed. He said he enjoys playing the “nice guy,” something he hasn’t done very often in his career.

When asked about the future of Man Vs…, Atkinson said he has not yet decided on making a third season. He shared that he does not read reviews or critics’ opinions. Instead, he only cares about one thing whether people enjoy watching the show. For him, the number of viewers is the true sign of success, not what reviewers write.
