How Percy Jackson Season Two Created Its Epic Sea of Monsters Chariot Race Sequence

The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians brings one of its biggest action moments to life: the exciting chariot race from The Sea of Monsters. Fans already enjoyed many action scenes in season one, but the team behind the show wanted to make this sequence even larger and more thrilling. Director James Bobin, who worked on the first two episodes, explained that they aimed to create a scene that felt real, intense, and full of energy.

Percy Jackson Season Two Features Epic Chariot Race

To make the race look authentic, the production team built a full racetrack in British Columbia. It was almost a quarter mile long and designed like a smaller version of the historic Circus Maximus. The set included grandstands, detailed statues, and special chariots for each Camp Half-Blood cabin. Each chariot matched the style of the cabin it represented. For example, Percy and Tyson’s chariot had a trident design, while the Hephaestus cabin had a steampunk-inspired one. The team wanted the environment to feel big, but still believable for the number of campers shown on screen.

One of the most impressive parts of the sequence is that the show used real horses instead of relying only on visual effects. The creators felt that real horses gave more emotion and physical weight to the scene—the sound of hooves, the movement, and even the sweat helped make it feel more alive. About 30 horses were brought to the set, and the stunt team worked carefully to keep everyone safe. Because many cast members are minors, the production had to follow strict rules about shooting scenes with live animals, which led to creative solutions using stunt performers and editing.

The race plays a key role in the story. After Thalia’s tree is poisoned, Camp Half-Blood must find the Golden Fleece to save their protective barrier. Winning the chariot race decides who will lead the quest. Percy hopes he, Tyson, and Annabeth can work together, but things do not go as he planned. In the end, Clarisse wins the race and earns the right to lead the mission, giving her an important moment of growth in the season.

Director Bobin said that creating the chariot race was challenging but rewarding. The goal was not just to show a big action scene, but to tell an emotional story about loyalty, conflict, and teamwork. The result is one of the most memorable sequences of the season, bringing fans deeper into the world of Percy Jackson.
