Gigi Chao Reflects on Solitary Childhood and Hardworking Student Life in the United Kingdom

Gigi Chao, the 45-year-old daughter of Hong Kong tycoon Cecil Chao and singer Irene Yeh, recently shared rare insights into her childhood and early adulthood. Despite being born into wealth, Chao explained that her life was not easy. Her parents separated when she was born, and she often lived alone in a large mansion. She joined social media platform Xiaohongshu in November and has since opened up about her upbringing and personal struggles.

Gigi Chao Shares Her Challenging Childhood Experiences

Chao described living between two very different worlds. Her father’s home was luxurious, with Rolls-Royces and social attention, but she still felt lonely. In contrast, her mother’s household was frugal and crowded. After her mother remarried, Chao moved to the United States at the age of six. She recalled that having so many people watching her every move made her feel pressure from a young age. At 13, her father sent her to the United Kingdom, where she experienced true freedom for the first time. She wanted to live a life grounded in her own efforts rather than her family’s wealth.

Life in the U.K. was challenging. Chao took on many jobs to support herself, including delivering newspapers, washing dishes, moving beer crates, and working overnight as a care assistant in an elderly home. She balanced these jobs with her studies, which were demanding. Despite the hardships, Chao described these years as spiritually rewarding. They taught her to appreciate what she had, connect with people from different backgrounds, and value kindness from strangers. She recalled spending holidays with friends’ families when she could not afford to return to Hong Kong.

Chao worked hard and lived frugally. She saved £50,000 from her minimum wage jobs and gave the money to her mother, showing her care and understanding of her mother’s modest upbringing. These experiences helped Chao learn the value of earning wealth through her own efforts. She believes that living a life of independence and empathy shaped her into the person she is today.
