Noah Hawley Still Hopes His Canceled Star Trek Movie May Return Under Paramount’s New Leadership

Filmmaker Noah Hawley, known for Fargo and Alien: Earth, is once again speaking about the Star Trek movie he was developing for Paramount. His film was originally approved, planned, and even close to production in 2020. But everything changed when a new executive took over and decided to cancel the project. Now, with new leadership at Paramount, Hawley is hopeful that his idea might still have a future.

Noah Hawley Remains Hopeful His Star Trek Film Could Return Soon

Hawley explained on the Smartless podcast that he wanted to create a Star Trek film focused on intelligence, curiosity, and exploring classic themes of the franchise. He felt that many modern movies are centered on battles and war, but Star Trek has always been different. He highlighted a famous moment from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where Captain Kirk wins by outsmarting his enemy, not by overpowering him. This, he said, is what makes Star Trek special and what inspired his movie.

According to Hawley, Paramount originally loved his script. The studio began making arrangements for filming, and he was prepared to move to Australia for production. However, when executive Emma Watts joined the company, she immediately canceled his film. She wanted a “transition” movie that continued the Kelvin timeline films starring Chris Pine, believing it was a safer choice. Hawley said this decision came suddenly, at a time when the movie was nearly ready to start shooting, which made it impossible to adjust the script to fit the new direction.

After Hawley’s movie was canceled, Paramount tried again to make a fourth Kelvin film with director Matt Shakman. That project also collapsed just before filming. For years, Star Trek movie plans have started and stopped repeatedly, leaving fans unsure about what the future holds. Recently, Paramount announced a brand-new film from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, featuring fresh characters and not tied to any old timelines.

Even so, Hawley hasn’t given up. He recently spoke to Paramount’s new leader, David Ellison, and reminded him that his Star Trek script still exists. With the franchise now exploring new directions, Hawley hopes his idea could someday return. In a universe as big as Star Trek, there is always room for new stories.
