The 2025 MAMA Awards, Asia’s largest K-pop music event, will go ahead in Hong Kong but in a smaller format following a tragic fire in Tai Po. Organisers have cancelled the red-carpet segment and revised performances to reflect the city’s sombre mood. The awards ceremony will still be held at Kai Tak Stadium over Friday and Saturday, but adjustments were made out of respect for those affected by the disaster.
MAMA Awards Scaled Back After Tai Po Fire Tragedy
Local boy band MIRROR recently announced that they would not perform at the ceremony. The 12-member group’s management said they were withdrawing to show respect and mourning for the victims of the Wang Fuk Court fire. Earlier, other celebrities including Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-fat also withdrew from the event. Despite these changes, organisers confirmed the show and live broadcast would continue, including a moment of silence for the victims.

The Tai Po fire has been one of Hong Kong’s deadliest in decades. By Friday morning, the official toll reported 94 deaths, including a firefighter, and 76 injured, among them 11 firefighters. Flames began at Wang Cheong House on Wednesday and spread to seven other buildings in the Wang Fuk Court estate. Rescue teams continued searching the site and controlling the fire over three days, working to help survivors and recover victims.
This year’s MAMA Awards were originally planned as a large-scale event at the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium, marking the first Hong Kong staging in seven years. The stadium has roughly four times the capacity of the last venue, AsiaWorld–Arena. To maintain the awards’ core elements while being sensitive to the tragedy, organisers carefully revised performances, scheduling, and other parts of the show. They also hope the event can offer comfort and positive support to the city during this difficult time.

Even with the scaling back, the MAMA Awards remain an important moment for K-pop fans in Asia. The ceremony will continue to celebrate music achievements while honouring the victims of the Tai Po fire. Organisers, performers, and viewers are uniting in a shared spirit of respect and solidarity, showing how music can bring people together even during times of sorrow.
