Veteran actress Hong Huifang recently revealed that she almost became a victim of a common phone scam in 2024. In an interview with 8days, the 64-year-old said she was out jogging when she received a call from an unknown number. The caller addressed her as “Huifang-ah,” a nickname used by one of her real friends. Because of this familiar tone, she believed she was speaking to someone she knew.
Hong Huifang Shares Close Call With Scammer
The caller claimed their mobile phone had been stolen and asked her to save a new number. At first, nothing seemed suspicious. However, things took a worrying turn two days later when the same person contacted her again. They said they were trying to make a bank transfer, but the one-time password (OTP) was sent to their old number. They asked Huifang to help with the transfer, insisting they could not do it online. Out of concern, she even offered to bring the money to their home, but the caller refused and kept pushing for her help over the phone.
That was when Huifang felt something was wrong. She ended the call politely and immediately dialled her friend’s original number. To her shock, her real friend picked up and confirmed that their phone had not been lost. This was the moment Huifang realised she had narrowly avoided being scammed. She later informed her friend about the impersonation and advised them to warn people around them.

Huifang’s experience is not unusual. Many other celebrities have also encountered scammers. Actor Chen Hanwei shared that he once met a couple in a mall carpark who tried to sell him red wine. Although he initially refused, he later found himself buying two bottles for $100. A wine shop later told him the bottles were cheap and he had been tricked. He believed he may have been momentarily hypnotised during the incident.

These stories serve as an important reminder that scams can happen to anyone, even public figures. Hong Huifang hopes her experience encourages people to stay alert, verify information, and avoid sending money or personal details to strangers, no matter how convincing they may sound.
