Ruby Rose Blames Sydney Sweeney for ‘Christy’ Movie’s Box Office Failure, Calls Her a ‘Cretin’

Actress Ruby Rose has criticized Sydney Sweeney, blaming her for the poor box office performance of their new film Christy. The sports biopic, released on November 7, tells the story of real-life boxing champion Christy Martin, who became one of the first openly lesbian professional boxers. Despite high expectations, the movie only earned $1.3 million in its opening weekend, making it one of the worst wide releases in U.S. box office history.

In a Threads post, Ruby Rose claimed that Sydney Sweeney’s acting and attitude were responsible for the film’s failure. Rose revealed that she was once attached to the project and was supposed to play a character named Cherry. She praised the original script, saying it was “life-changing,” but criticized the final version after Sweeney joined the cast. According to Rose, most of the original team members understood the real struggles of the LGBTQ+ community, which she felt was lost in the new version.

Rose also condemned Sweeney’s comments after the movie’s poor performance. Sweeney had said she was proud of the project and that movies aren’t always about money but about impact. Rose, however, called Sweeney a “cretin,” accusing her of pretending to represent a community she doesn’t support. The criticism was also linked to Sweeney’s political background, as reports revealed she was registered as a Republican voter in Florida, which caused controversy among some fans.

Meanwhile, Christy Martin herself supported Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal. Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival, Martin said Sweeney perfectly captured both her strength and her shy nature. She appreciated how the actress portrayed her toughness inside the boxing ring and vulnerability outside of it. Martin described Sweeney’s performance as “awesome,” saying she played the role in a way that no one expected.

Despite the controversy, Sydney Sweeney has stood by her work on Christy. She said the film is about courage, survival, and hope, and she believes Christy Martin’s story can inspire and save lives. The actress also mentioned that the movie helped raise awareness about domestic violence. While the film’s box office numbers were disappointing, Sweeney emphasized that its emotional message mattered more than financial success.
