Chen Hanwei Recalls Being Tricked by Scammers While Promoting Drama Lost and Found in Singapore

Singaporean actor Chen Hanwei recently shared a surprising story about being tricked by scammers in a carpark years before the Covid-19 pandemic. The 56-year-old actor recalled how he was approached by a couple in a Mercedes-Benz with an infant near Paragon mall. The man offered him bottles of red wine, claiming that his bar had closed down and that Hanwei could buy some leftover stock. At first, Hanwei did not suspect anything unusual.

Hanwei explained that he tried to refuse the offer because he does not drink alcohol, but the man insisted. Feeling pressured, he eventually handed over $100 and received two bottles of wine. Later, when he checked at a wine shop upstairs, he discovered that the bottles were of very poor quality and only worth around $5 each. Hanwei reflected on the incident, saying he felt like he had been “hypnotised” and advised others to be careful when interacting with strangers in person or online.

The actor shared this experience while promoting his new drama, Lost and Found, in which he plays the character Chiang Boon Teck. The six-episode series tells the story of a young online gamer, Richie Chiang, and his tense relationship with his father during the Covid-19 pandemic. The plot thickens when Richie’s online girlfriend, Sakura, disappears, leading him to travel to Tokyo and encounter dangerous situations involving scams, human trafficking, and illegal labor.

Lost and Found is a collaboration between local production company Mocha Chai Laboratories, Empire of Arkadia, and Japan’s TV Man Union. Hanwei said this was his first time working with a Japanese production team and praised their meticulous approach to filming. He learned a lot by observing the director’s attention to detail, such as hand placement, expressions, and natural acting. This project also marks one of Hanwei’s rare appearances in an international production.

Hanwei expressed optimism about acting opportunities at his age, despite fewer roles available for actors in their 50s. He said that slowing down allowed him to recharge, gain new inspiration, and aim for a breakthrough in his craft. Lost and Found is scheduled to release on Mewatch and Japan’s NHK and NHK World in 2026. Hanwei hopes to participate in more international projects in the future, especially in Taiwan, appreciating their professional on-set culture.
