Famous author Stephen King and filmmaker Edgar Wright have shared their thoughts on the new version of The Running Man, a story that feels more relevant than ever in 2025. Originally written by King in the 1970s under the name Richard Bachman, the story imagines a future America filled with violence, government control, and dangerous reality TV. The latest movie version stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a man forced to survive a deadly game show where contestants are hunted for entertainment.
Stephen King, Edgar Wright Discuss The Running Man
In the story, the show “The Running Man” is broadcast by a powerful TV network. Contestants try to stay alive for 30 days while professional killers and the public chase them for money. King said he finds it interesting that his old story about 2025 America is being retold in the real year 2025. The new film is directed by Edgar Wright, known for Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz. King praised Wright’s vision, saying he captured the true meaning of the book better than the 1987 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Stephen King appreciated that Glen Powell’s version of Ben Richards looks like an ordinary man instead of a superhero. Wright agreed, explaining that he wanted Richards to be a “regular person,” not a trained fighter like other modern action heroes. The director revealed he had loved the book since his teenage years and always dreamed of creating a more faithful version of it. He even added fun details, such as showing Schwarzenegger’s face on a dollar bill, as a playful nod to the earlier movie.
Both King and Wright believe the story’s message is more powerful today. King said he wrote it long before reality shows existed, but now TV and social media often blur the line between entertainment and cruelty. He compared The Running Man’s deadly contest to modern shows where people compete for fame, even at personal cost.

Stephen King added that his book warns about how the media can control people’s minds and emotions. He said, “It’s not just about entertainment it’s about what it’s doing to you.” The new version of The Running Man aims to remind audiences to think critically about the world of reality television and the power of the media in shaping our society.
