Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, accused in a rape case, has reportedly fled to Australia after escaping police custody. The first-time legislator from Sanour, Punjab, had been missing since September 2, and his sudden reappearance in a video interview with an overseas Punjabi web channel has caused major embarrassment for the Punjab Police. Authorities had been conducting several raids at his possible hideouts for weeks but were unable to trace him.

In the video, Pathanmajra claimed that he would return to India only after getting bail. He denied all allegations made against him and called the case a “political conspiracy.” The MLA said that in Punjab, ministers and party members were not being consulted on important matters. He also accused party leaders of mismanaging the state and restricting freedom of speech. Despite his criticism, he said he still believed in the Indian judicial system and hoped for justice through legal means.
According to police reports, Pathanmajra had earlier escaped when officers tried to arrest him in Karnal, Haryana. During that operation, his supporters allegedly opened fire and threw stones at the police. Pathanmajra later denied being part of the firing, claiming he ran away because he feared being killed in a “fake encounter.” After his disappearance, the Patiala Police issued a lookout notice, and the court began proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender.

The case was registered on September 1 at the Civil Lines police station in Patiala. A woman from Zirakpur accused Pathanmajra of lying about his marital status and entering into a relationship with her under false pretenses. She alleged that he married her in 2021 while already being married to another woman, and later sexually exploited and threatened her. She also said he sent her “obscene” messages and materials.

Police are now coordinating with immigration authorities and the Ministry of External Affairs to trace Pathanmajra’s movements and confirm his current location in Australia. The incident has sparked political controversy in Punjab, raising questions about accountability and the party’s handling of serious criminal allegations against its elected representatives.
