Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro recently recounted a frightening supernatural experience during a stay at the Waitomo Caves Hotel in New Zealand. Known for his fascination with the unusual and eerie, del Toro always requests the “haunted room” when he checks into hotels. While he usually has few ghostly encounters, this particular visit proved unforgettable.
Guillermo del Toro Shares Scary Ghost Encounter
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, del Toro explained that he was scouting locations for The Hobbit films when the incident occurred. He was alone in the hotel’s east wing, watching The Wire on DVD, when he suddenly heard what he described as “an entire murder” happening in the room. He heard screams, stabbing sounds, and crying noises that were not coming from the television or anyone else in the hotel.
Despite the terrifying experience, Guillermo del Toro did not leave the room. Instead, he spent the night staring at his laptop, refusing to look away in case something appeared behind him. He admitted that he could not sleep at all, fearing what might be on the balcony or elsewhere in the room. His careful attention to his surroundings shows both his fascination and respect for the paranormal.
Even after this unsettling experience, del Toro’s love of the supernatural has not waned. He revealed that he is planning to buy a haunted house in England, with the condition that it must allow him to see, hear, and feel a ghost during his stay. He expressed excitement at the idea of further ghostly encounters and hopes to experience more of the unknown in a controlled and personal setting.
