Famous British singer Sam Smith, known for songs like Stay With Me and Too Good at Goodbyes, has revealed a very personal story from their childhood. Sam shared that they had liposuction at the age of 13 after being badly bullied in school because of their weight. The singer, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, said the teasing made life at school very painful and difficult.
Sam Smith Opens Up About Childhood Liposuction
Speaking on Penn Badgley’s podcast, “Podcrushed,” Sam explained that growing up was tough because they were constantly mocked about their body. They said, “I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. I couldn’t go swimming, and changing in the locker room was a nightmare.” The surgery was done to remove excess fat from their chest so they could feel more comfortable and confident.
Sam Smith also said their parents were very supportive of the decision. However, even after the surgery, life didn’t become easier right away. Sam shared that they wore the bandage for a long time after the operation, even longer than necessary, because it allowed them to skip lunch lines at school. They said jokingly, “If I wore the bandage, I could go first in the lunch queue, so I just kept it on for almost a year.” This showed how much food and body image had become connected in their young mind.
The singer mentioned that their struggles with body image started very early. In fact, they told doctors about their discomfort at age 11 and even avoided swimming classes when they were just eight years old because of self-consciousness. Although the liposuction helped a little, Sam said the experience didn’t completely solve their emotional struggles with body image and eating habits.
