Legendary Thrash Metal Guitarist Criticizes Dave Mustaine While Weighing In On Metallica Vs. Megadeth Debate

Legendary Slayer guitarist Kerry King has sparked new discussions among metal fans after sharing his honest opinion about the long-running Metallica vs. Megadeth rivalry. In a recent interview with Reigning TV, King was asked to pick between the two iconic bands. Without hesitation, his bandmate Mark Osegueda, who sings in King’s solo project, quickly said, “Metallica!” King agreed, adding bluntly, “I’m going to be brutally honest. Metallica has a singer.”

King’s comment was seen as a light jab at Dave Mustaine, the frontman of Megadeth, whose vocals have often been debated by fans and critics. While many admire Mustaine’s talent as a guitarist and songwriter, his singing style has divided listeners for decades. Even Mustaine himself once admitted that his strength lies in his guitar playing, calling himself “a very advanced rhythm guitarist who can sing over complicated rhythms.”

The rivalry between Metallica and Megadeth dates back to 1983, when Mustaine was fired from Metallica due to his heavy drinking and conflicts with other band members. Soon after, he founded Megadeth and promised to make his new band bigger and better than Metallica. Although Megadeth became a major name in heavy metal, Metallica achieved greater commercial success and global fame. Over the years, Mustaine has also accused Metallica of using his early music without permission and claimed that guitarist Kirk Hammett received royalties for songs Mustaine helped create.

Despite their troubled past, relations between the two bands have improved. In 2022, Mustaine told Consequence of Sound that he and Metallica’s James Hetfield had become friends again, saying, “It took a while, but we’re probably better off now than we’ve been in a long time.” Their mutual respect has grown with time, showing that even old rivalries can fade.

In a surprising twist, Mustaine recently announced that Megadeth will cover Metallica’s classic song “Ride the Lightning” on their upcoming and possibly final album, expected in 2026. Mustaine, who co-wrote the original track, said the cover is meant as a tribute and a way to “close the circle.” After decades of competition and conflict, this gesture shows that two of heavy metal’s greatest bands are finally finding harmony both in music and friendship.
