Netflix’s The Witcher has finally returned for its much-awaited fourth season, and this time, there’s a big change Liam Hemsworth has officially taken over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill. Fans were curious to know how the show would handle this major recasting, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has now revealed how the transition was carefully written into the story.
The Witcher explains Liam Hemsworth’s recast
According to Hissrich, the writers decided not to ignore the change but to “allude to it” through a clever opening scene. The season begins with a young girl named Nimue arguing with an old storyteller, Stribog, about Geralt’s real story. She believes the true version is told in a different book written by Jaskier. This idea allowed the creators to explore one of The Witcher’s main themes: how stories can change depending on who tells them. This creative start helped introduce Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt naturally and meaningfully.
To make the transition even smoother, several key moments from previous seasons were reshot with Hemsworth playing Geralt. Hissrich explained that the team wanted viewers to immediately understand that this was a new actor but the same character. “We didn’t want to dance around the fact that it’s a new person,” she said. The focus was to help audiences connect with Geralt again, not just the actor.

For Liam Hemsworth, stepping into such an iconic role was a huge challenge. He trained for months to prepare for the action scenes, sword fights, and Geralt’s signature personality. His first major shot involved fighting dangerous Kikimoras, a tough start that tested both his physical and emotional preparation. Hemsworth shared that the experience was “daunting but rewarding,” and he now feels deeply connected to the character after living with him for over two years.

Season 4 also explores new emotional journeys, especially between Geralt and Yennefer. Actress Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer, said their love story continues to be powerful even though they are separated for much of the season. The two characters eventually reunite, leading to one of the season’s most emotional moments. With Hemsworth’s strong debut and an intriguing new narrative, The Witcher Season 4 promises to be a fresh and exciting chapter in the fantasy saga.
