Fans of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies may have a reason to get excited again. Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer of The Batman series directed by Matt Reeves, has revealed that he hasn’t received a “no” yet regarding his idea for Spider-Man 4. The concept would bring back Tobey Maguire as an older version of Peter Parker, showing him juggling life as a husband and father while still being a superhero.
Tobey Maguire May Return In Spider-Man 4
Tomlin first shared his interest in the project earlier this year, saying he wanted to explore a more mature side of Spider-Man. He imagines a version of Peter Parker who has been through life’s ups and downs and must now balance family responsibilities with his heroic duties. The story would also feature Mary Jane Watson, played by Kirsten Dunst, as Peter’s wife. This idea excited many longtime fans of the original Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi.
When a fan recently asked for an update on social media, Tomlin replied, “Slow and steady wins the race… I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet!” He also mentioned that such a project involves “a lot of people and politics,” meaning that approval from both Marvel and Sony would be necessary before anything moves forward. Although nothing is confirmed, his statement has sparked new hope among fans who have been waiting years for Maguire’s return.

Tobey Maguire last appeared as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), alongside Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield. His cameo was a major highlight of the film and proved that audiences still love his version of the character. Since then, many fans have been campaigning online for Spider-Man 4 to happen, especially after Sony’s previous Spider-Man projects struggled to find success.
For now, Tomlin is busy working on The Batman 2 and other film projects like the John Wick: Caine spinoff and BRZRKR adaptation. While there are no official updates about Spider-Man 4, his comments suggest that the door isn’t closed yet.
