Emraan Hashmi says Haq doesn’t malign Muslims or target any community, calls himself a liberal Muslim

Actor Emraan Hashmi has spoken out in support of his upcoming film Haq, which has recently faced criticism from some groups. The movie is inspired by the famous Shah Bano case, a historic legal battle that changed the rights of Muslim women in India regarding divorce and maintenance. Emraan stars in the film alongside Yami Gautam, who plays a character based on Shah Bano. The actor clarified that Haq does not “malign” or blame any community, but instead presents a fair and balanced story.

In a recent interview, Emraan said that this film made him think more deeply about his own identity and responsibility as a Muslim. He explained, “When I read the script, I saw it creatively, but I also knew that this subject is sensitive for my community. I had to look at it from all sides.” Emraan said that the movie does not point fingers at any religion or group and that it carries a message of understanding and justice.

The actor also shared that he personally related to the message of the film as a liberal Muslim. He said, “If this film had said something against my community, I would not have done it. But I saw that the story respects everyone. I come from a secular family my wife is Hindu, and in my home, my son does both puja and namaaz.” Emraan emphasized that Haq shows the diversity and harmony that exist in India, rather than creating division.

The Shah Bano case, which inspired the film, took place in the 1970s and 1980s. Shah Bano, a 62-year-old woman from Indore, went to court asking for maintenance from her divorced husband. The Supreme Court supported her plea, ruling in her favor in 1985. However, the government later changed the law, sparking debates about women’s rights and religion in India. Haq is said to explore these themes through modern storytelling.

The film is produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja. It will be released in theatres on November 7, 2025. Emraan hopes the audience watches it with an open mind and understands that Haq is about equality, truth, and justice not about religion.
