After the disappointing box office performance of War 2, director Ayan Mukerji has decided to step away from Dhoom 4 and return his focus to Brahmastra 2. According to reports, Mukerji has already started working on the script and development of the sequel to his 2022 fantasy film Brahmastra, which starred Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
Ayan Mukerji Leaves Dhoom 4 for Brahmastra 2
War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, was expected to be one of the biggest action films of 2025. However, it failed to perform well both critically and commercially. Following this, there was speculation that Ayan Mukerji would direct Dhoom 4 for Yash Raj Films, with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead. But new information suggests that Mukerji has chosen to move away from the action franchise completely.
A source revealed that Ayan felt films like War 2 and Dhoom 4 didn’t match his creative style. He wanted to work on projects that offered more emotional depth, romance, and strong storytelling areas where he feels most comfortable. The source also shared that Ayan had limited creative control during War 2, as the story and screenplay were written by others. This experience reportedly made him realize he prefers to develop stories from scratch and bring his full vision to life.
Before making this decision, Mukerji reportedly discussed the matter with both Ranbir Kapoor and Yash Raj Films head Aditya Chopra. Both were supportive of his choice. Interestingly, Aditya Chopra may now direct Dhoom 4 himself, as discussions within YRF are ongoing.

Recently, Ayan shared pictures from the Himalayas on Instagram with the caption “Pt. 2,” hinting at his return to the Brahmastra universe. Sources suggest that he plans to begin shooting Brahmastra 2 in 2026. The scriptwork is nearly done, and he is currently refining it during his mountain retreat.
