Malayalam cinema has taken a big leap into the world of superheroes with “Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra”, directed by Dominic Arun. The film stars Kalyani Priyadarshan as India’s first female superhero, and it beautifully mixes Indian folklore, mythology, and modern storytelling to create something truly fresh and original.
‘Lokah’ Redefines New-Age Superhero Storytelling
At first glance, Lokah may look like another superhero movie inspired by Hollywood’s Marvel films, with its action-packed opening and slick visuals. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that this is not a copy, it’s a unique Indian superhero story with deep cultural roots.
The film follows Chandra, a mysterious woman with supernatural powers who transforms into a Yakshi, a figure drawn from Kerala’s traditional legends. Instead of being a typical Western-style vampire or superhuman, Chandra’s powers come from ancient stories and spiritual energy. This creative blend of folklore and fantasy makes Lokah stand out among Indian films.
Unlike many big-budget Bollywood superhero movies, Lokah was reportedly made on a budget of under ₹50 crore, yet its visuals, sound, and storytelling feel world-class. The cinematography and VFX (visual effects) are subtle and powerful, creating a believable world that doesn’t depend on flashy gimmicks. The sound design adds to the tension and emotion, building up the supernatural atmosphere without being loud or overdone.
What makes the film special is how it stays connected to Malayali life and culture. The characters speak, act, and live like real people, even as they face magical and mythical events. Through small but clever details such as a barking dog linking two timelines or a teetotaller officer’s unique fate the film weaves a smart and layered story.

Lokah also raises interesting questions about power, trauma, and identity, especially for women. Kalyani Priyadarshan’s portrayal of Chandra is both strong and emotional. Her quiet expressions and inner struggle give the film real depth. The movie ends by teasing a larger superhero universe, with appearances by Tovino Thomas and Dulquer Salmaan, hinting at future chapters.
