In an interview, Pankaj Kapur said, “Toxic masculinity exists in society, and just because a film shows it, it doesn’t mean it promotes it. Films show the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.” He highlighted that Kabir Singh portrayed a flawed character, which made the story compelling and sparked conversations about human behavior.

Pankaj also praised Shahid Kapoor for his acting growth over the years. He said that Shahid discovered his true potential with Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider in 2014. Before that, Shahid was mostly offered “sweet boy” roles, but Haider allowed him to explore more dramatic and intense characters. Pankaj added that Shahid carefully chooses his projects, which has helped him deliver strong performances in films like Farzi and Kabir Singh.

Interestingly, Pankaj revealed that he did not formally train Shahid. When Shahid requested a workshop, they worked together for about a week, but Shahid also learned from other experts like Naseeruddin Shah. According to Pankaj, this helped Shahid develop his acting skills independently.

By defending Kabir Singh, Pankaj Kapur separated art from moral judgment. He emphasized that films reflect society’s realities, and actors like Shahid Kapoor take risks by portraying complex, flawed characters. His comments bring a nuanced perspective to the ongoing debates about cinema, storytelling, and societal issues.
