Kaouther Ben Hania’s latest film, The Voice of Hind Rajab, has made history at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The emotional movie received a 23-minute standing ovation, the longest ever recorded at the festival. The screening left many in the audience in tears, while chants of “Free Palestine” echoed in the grand hall, showing how deeply the story touched people.
The Voice of Hind Rajab breaks Venice record
The film tells the heartbreaking real-life story of five-year-old Hind Rajab, a Palestinian child who lost her life in Gaza in January 2024. Hind was traveling with her relatives to escape violence in Gaza City when their car was bombed. Tragically, most of her family died instantly, but Hind survived the first attack. She was left trapped inside the car among the bodies of her loved ones.

For several hours, Hind stayed alive by speaking over the phone with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society. In the recordings, which are included in the film, the little girl can be heard pleading, “Please come to me, please come. I’m scared.” Her words reflect both her courage and her innocence in the middle of a war zone. Sadly, when rescuers finally reached the spot, both Hind and the paramedics who tried to save her were found dead.

Director Kaouther Ben Hania, who has previously been nominated for an Academy Award, presented the film with great emotion. On the red carpet, she even held up a picture of Hind Rajab, reminding the world that the story is not just cinema, but a real tragedy faced by thousands of families in conflict zones.
The overwhelming response at Venice shows how cinema can be a powerful voice for justice and humanity. By highlighting Hind’s story, the film raises awareness about the struggles of innocent children caught in wars.
