Rekha and Mukesh Aggarwal married in 1990 after meeting through friends. At first, it appeared to be a happy union, but differences soon became clear. Rekha herself admitted in later interviews that it was not a marriage based on love. She described her husband as a stranger and felt that their personalities did not match.

The couple went on a honeymoon to London, but even during that trip, Rekha realised that their outlook on life was very different. Within a few months, problems grew so serious that the two decided to separate. According to Rekha, the idea of divorce came first from Mukesh, although she also agreed that the relationship was not working.
Sadly, not long after their separation, Mukesh Aggarwal died by suicide. This sudden tragedy shocked the entire film industry and left Rekha facing harsh public criticism. Many people unfairly blamed her, calling her names and accusing her of being responsible for her husband’s death.

Years later, Rekha opened up about this painful period in her life during interviews. She explained that the experience, though extremely difficult, taught her many lessons about people and relationships. She went through different emotions: shock, anger, denial, self–pity, and finally acceptance. She even described that phase as the time when she “grew up” emotionally.
The media attention was relentless, but Rekha handled it with dignity. She clarified that the decision to part ways had been mutual and that she never wished for her husband to suffer. Over time, she found strength in her work and her own resilience.
Since then, Rekha has chosen not to marry again. She continues to be respected as a legendary actress, admired not only for her contribution to Indian cinema but also for the courage with which she faced life’s challenges.
