Malayalam cinema has given us many unique films, and now it has stepped into the world of superheroes with Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. Directed by Dominic Arun, the movie stars Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen in lead roles. Unlike most fantasy films that depend only on grand visuals, Lokah stands out because it combines strong writing, local folklore, and emotions with stunning visuals.
Lokah Chandra Brings Malayalam Superhero
The story follows Lokah Chandra (played by Kalyani), who returns to India after living in Sweden for 20 years. She is not an ordinary woman but a yakshi, a mystical spirit from Kerala folklore. She hides her true nature because exposure to sunlight makes her body burn. Chandra slowly connects with Sunny (Naslen) and Venu (Chandu Salimkumar), two carefree youngsters who live across from her apartment in Bengaluru. The film reveals Chandra’s powerful identity as Kalliyankattu Neeli, a legendary figure reimagined here as a protector of the outcast and marginalized.

One of the strongest aspects of the movie is how it avoids copying mythological tales just for spectacle. Instead, the film roots itself in Kerala’s culture and history, adding layers of social and feminist themes. Chandra is not shown as a frightening spirit but as a saviour who rises from among common people. This makes the character relatable and inspiring.
The film is also rich in visual storytelling. Cinematographer Nimish Ravi and editor Chaman Chakko bring a fresh style to every scene. The colour palette is simple yet effective, and action sequences are thrilling, especially the pre-interval scenes that reveal Chandra’s past. Stunt choreography by Yannick Ben adds to the excitement.

Performances are another highlight. Kalyani impresses in action scenes while keeping her emotions subtle. Naslen shines with his natural comedy and emotional balance, while Chandu adds charm as Venu. Sandy plays the villain Inspector Nachiyappa Gowda, a corrupt and misogynistic cop who later gains powers. His role is menacing and provides a strong challenge to Chandra.
The film also sets the stage for a larger cinematic universe, with glimpses of more characters who may appear in future parts. Dulquer Salmaan, who produced the film, even makes a special cameo as Odiyan in the post-credit scene.
