The world of Bengali cinema and politics is mourning the loss of Joy Banerjee, a popular actor of the 1980s and 1990s who later joined politics. He passed away on Monday morning at a private hospital in Kolkata at the age of 63.

Joy Banerjee was admitted to the hospital on August 15 after he developed severe breathing problems. Doctors later diagnosed him with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a long-term lung condition. His condition worsened over the following days, and he had been on ventilator support for some time. Sadly, he breathed his last at 11:35 am on August 25. He is survived by his wife and mother.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Joy Banerjee was considered a matinee idol of Tollywood. He delivered many successful films that made him a household name. Some of his memorable works include Nagmati (1983), Milan Tithi (1985), Chopper (1986), and Hirak Jayanti (1990). His good looks and charming screen presence earned him a loyal fan following.
Actress and Trinamool Congress MP Satabdi Roy, who worked with him in several films, expressed her grief. “I am shattered. I knew Joy was unwell for a long time, and we were all hoping for his recovery,” she said.

Apart from films, Banerjee also entered the world of politics. He contested the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from Birbhum and Uluberia constituencies. Although he did not win, his decision to join politics made him an important name in Bengal’s political landscape. In November 2021, he resigned from active politics.
Condolences came from across the political and film fraternity. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar shared his sorrow, calling Banerjee’s demise an irreparable loss. Fans on social media also remembered him fondly, posting clips from his films and recalling his impactful roles.
