Rajinikanth has once again proved his unmatched star power with his latest film Coolie. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the movie has broken records overseas, especially in North America. In just nine days, Coolie collected USD 6.60 million, making it the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025 in the region.
Rajinikanth’s Coolie Beats Chhaava in North America
The film’s strong opening was the key to its success. From premiere shows alone, Coolie earned over USD 3 million, a figure usually seen only with big Hollywood or franchise films. By the end of its extended first weekend, the film had already crossed USD 5 million. Even with slight drops on weekdays, the movie managed to add steady collections, finally crossing Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which had earned USD 6.4 million in its lifetime run.

Interestingly, the Telugu version of Coolie also contributed nearly USD 1.8 million, showing the film’s wide appeal beyond just Tamil-speaking audiences.
However, the story is quite different in India. Domestically, Vicky Kaushal’s historical epic Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, remains the box office champion of 2025. It has collected an extraordinary Rs 601 crore across India, far ahead of Coolie’s Rs 245.50 crore in 10 days. While Coolie is performing well, it has not reached the same level of success in the Indian market as it has overseas.

Trade experts say this shows how Indian cinema is changing. Today, films are not only competing in domestic markets but also in global ones. Rajinikanth’s enduring popularity among the Indian diaspora has once again proved that he is a global superstar. On the other hand, Chhaava’s powerful story and performances have made it a massive success at home.
With both films shining in different markets, 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Indian cinema. Coolie is the overseas winner, while Chhaava dominates the Indian box office together showing how diverse audiences connect with different kinds of stories.
