Bollywood director Vivek Agnihotri is once again in the headlines after the trailer of his upcoming film The Bengal Files released on August 16. The trailer created a buzz because it showed a child being named Taimur, which led many people to believe that Agnihotri was indirectly targeting Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, who had named their son Taimur in 2016.
Vivek Agnihotri Says Nobody Should Name Taimur
However, Vivek Agnihotri recently clarified the matter during an interview on The Raunac Show. He said that the scene in his film was not meant to attack Saif Ali Khan or his family. At the same time, he firmly stated his opinion: “Nobody should name their child Taimur.”

The director explained his view by referring to his visit to Samarkand, where he saw the tomb of Taimur (also known as Timur). Agnihotri recalled how history describes Taimur as a powerful conqueror but also as a cruel ruler. According to him, Taimur was responsible for the massacre of thousands of people, including killing one lakh people in one night during his invasions of Delhi and Kashmir.
Vivek Agnihotri said that while Taimur might be considered a hero in some countries, in India he is remembered for his violence and destruction. That is why, he believes, it is inappropriate to name a child after him.

Back in 2016, when Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor announced their baby’s name, it sparked a huge backlash on social media. Many criticized the choice. Saif later admitted in an interview that he had considered changing his son’s name to avoid negativity, but Kareena was against the idea. Over time, the controversy faded, and today their son Taimur remains one of the most photographed star kids in India.
Agnihotri’s new film The Bengal Files is based on the 1946 riots in Bengal, a tragic chapter in Indian history. The movie features a strong ensemble cast including Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Mohan Kapur, and others. The film has already attracted attention and controversy, but Agnihotri insists that his aim is to show historical truth, not to target individuals.
