Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, best known for his memorable role as the strict professor in Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he had been admitted due to health complications. The exact cause of his death has not yet been revealed. His funeral will be held on August 19 in Thane.

Achyut Potdar had a long and successful career in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, spanning more than four decades. He worked in over 125 films, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. His filmography included classics such as Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Rangeela, Dilwale, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator. He was admired for seamlessly balancing commercially successful movies with critically acclaimed ones.
Apart from films, Potdar had an illustrious career in television. He appeared in popular shows such as Bharat Ek Khoj, Pradhan Mantri, All The Best, Aahat, Wagle Ki Duniya, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, and Majha Hoshil Na. His wide range of performances earned him respect as a versatile and dependable actor.

Interestingly, before entering the world of cinema, Achyut Potdar lived a very different life. He began as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, and later joined the Indian Army, where he retired as a Captain in 1967. He then worked as an executive at Indian Oil for nearly 25 years, retiring at the age of 58. It was only at the age of 44 that he seriously pursued acting, turning his passion into a full-fledged career.
Potdar became a pop culture figure when his dialogue from 3 Idiots “Arey kehna kya chahte ho”went viral on social media, gaining popularity among younger audiences.
His passing marks the end of an era for Indian cinema. Known for his discipline, humility, and dedication, Achyut Potdar will be remembered fondly by fans and fellow actors alike. His contributions to films and television will continue to inspire future generations.
