Initially, Sitaare Zameen Par had a budget of about Rs 96 crore (or $11 million). But the cost increased to Rs 122 crore (around $14-15 million) because Aamir chose not to sell the movie to OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video. His partners did not agree with this decision, so he had to buy them out, which added to the cost.

Aamir Khan explained that he refused the OTT deals because he believed in a different way to release the film. Instead of the usual way of releasing in theatres and then on OTT, he first released Sitaare Zameen Par in theatres, and then on YouTube. This approach is new for Indian filmmakers and could help others in the future, especially small or independent filmmakers who find it hard to get theatre distribution.

The movie was released on YouTube for Rs 100, making it affordable and easy for many viewers to watch. Aamir said the film is doing better on YouTube than expected, and both he and YouTube are promoting it actively.

Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna and stars Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, and many new actors. The film’s music is composed by the famous trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, and the lyrics are by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Although the film has not yet fully recovered its cost, the worldwide box office collection has reached Rs 276 crore. Aamir’s decision to reject a big OTT deal and release the film on YouTube first is a new step in Indian cinema. He hopes this will open new opportunities for filmmakers and change how films are released in India and abroad.
