Marvel’s new movie Fantastic Four: First Steps made a strong start at the box office, earning $118 million in its first weekend in North America. It came very close to DC’s new Superman film, which made $125 million during its opening weekend earlier this month.

Both movies were highly awaited by fans. They are new versions of famous superhero characters that had struggled in past films. The last Fantastic Four movie, released in 2015, flopped with just $25 million at the box office. Superman was also coming off some controversial films directed by Zack Snyder.

This time, things look much better. Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. DC’s Superman stars David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. Fans and critics have responded well to both films, giving each an A- CinemaScore, which shows that people really enjoyed them.
These movies are important for Marvel and DC’s future. Fantastic Four will continue in Marvel’s big team-up movie Avengers: Doomsday, releasing in December 2026. On the other hand, Superman kicks off DC’s brand-new movie universe, which includes the upcoming Supergirl film in June 2026.

Movie theaters are also happy because July has been a strong month. Along with Fantastic Four and Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth opened earlier this month and made $148 million in five days.
Still, the summer’s biggest hit so far is Lilo & Stitch. The live-action Disney remake made $146 million in its first weekend and is the only movie in 2025 to cross $1 billion worldwide.
Fantastic Four: First Steps is the first Fantastic Four movie officially made under the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), now that the characters belong to Disney. It is also Marvel’s third release in 2025, after Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts.
