Director Ashwin Kumar, who made the animated mythological film Mahavatar Narsimha, recently spoke about his vision and the future of Indian mythology in cinema. His film, which is part of a seven-part Mahavatar Universe, focuses on different avatars of Lord Vishnu. The first film, Mahavatar Narsimha, had a successful opening and earned ₹7.5 crore over its first weekend.
Ashwin Kumar Talks Mahavatar Narsimha, Ramayana
In an interview, Ashwin explained why he chose animation instead of live-action. He said animation allowed him to create a more magical and divine world, something that might not be possible in a live-action film. It also helped avoid the debate that usually happens when actors play gods, like Ranbir Kapoor playing Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana.

Ashwin believes Indian mythology is very deep and meaningful, not just stories but part of our cultural roots. He said that while people argue that mythology is not history, he personally feels connected to these ancient stories. According to him, we must preserve and share these tales with future generations, and films are a powerful way to do it.

Talking about the story of Mahavatar Narsimha, Ashwin said it’s about how dharma (righteousness) always wins, even if evil appears stronger. The story focuses on Prahlada, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, whose faith leads to the appearance of Narsimha, who defeats the powerful demon Hiranyakashyap. Even though Hiranyakashyap had boons that made him nearly unbeatable, the universe eventually brings balance through Narsimha.
Ashwin also mentioned that animation is not just for kids. His film is made with a lot of love and attention to detail and aims to reach all age groups. He hopes that Gen-Z can find strength, inspiration, and inner peace through the spiritual messages of the film.
With this film, Ashwin Kumar aims to revive the glory of India’s puranic stories in a modern format while staying true to their spiritual essence.
