Imax, the famous movie technology company known for big-screen experiences, is doing better than ever. In the second quarter of 2025, Imax made a huge 139% jump in profits. Its global box office earnings rose 41% to $281 million. Movies like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Brad Pitt’s F1, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners helped Imax earn big money, even though it only has around 400 screens in North America.
Imax CEO Talks Global Growth and Future Plans
Imax CEO Richard Gelfond says the company is also growing fast outside of Hollywood. In countries like Japan, China, India, and South Korea, more people are watching local films rather than Hollywood movies. In Japan alone, local films made up 75% of the box office in 2024. Imax saw this trend early and started showing more local-language films in its theaters. Now, about 40% of Imax’s total global earnings come from local movies.

One major success came from the Japanese anime film Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. It made a record $49.4 million on its opening weekend, and $3.5 million of that came from just 59 Imax screens. Imax plans to show the movie in over 40 countries starting in September.
Gelfond says Imax’s success in Japan comes from working with local partners and studios, especially with anime, which performs very well. The company is also expanding in places like Indonesia, where it plans to double its number of theaters.

Besides movies, Imax is also testing other types of content like live concerts, eSports, and K-pop shows. In China, they screened the League of Legends world championship in over 150 theaters, most of which were sold out.
Imax wants to continue growing by showing more local-language films and bringing them to international audiences. The company believes this mix of local and Hollywood content will help it stay strong in a changing global market.
Gelfond believes that with the right content local or global people will keep coming to Imax theaters for a special movie experience.
