Famous filmmaker Karan Johar recently admitted that he regrets making the 2017 romantic film OK Jaanu. In a podcast interview with Jay Shetty, Karan spoke about how important it is for a director to trust their instincts. He said that he ignored his own gut feeling while working on OK Jaanu, and that was a mistake.

OK Jaanu starred Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, and was a Hindi remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film OK Kanmani. The movie focused on a modern live-in relationship and had popular songs like “Humma Humma” and “Enna Sona,” composed by A.R. Rahman. Despite high expectations and a good team, the movie did not do well at the box office.

Karan Johar shared that at the time, both actors had just delivered a hit with Aashiqui 2. The project came to him already planned, with Shaad Ali as the director. Everything looked perfect on paper. But deep down, Karan said he felt unsure if the film should be remade at all. He questioned whether the emotional moments of the original film could be recreated.
He said, “In my heart, I felt something was not right. But I still went ahead with it. Everyone involved did their job well, but the result wasn’t satisfying.” Karan admitted that when he doesn’t follow his instincts, things often go wrong.

OK Jaanu was released in 2017 and focused on the lives of a young couple in a live-in relationship. It tried to show the struggles of love, career, and modern values. However, the audience didn’t connect with it as expected.
Karan is now preparing for the release of his next movie, Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. The film is set to release on August 1, 2025, and is produced by Dharma Productions, Zee Studios, and Cloud 9 Pictures. It is directed by Shazia Iqbal.
