Ratan Thiyam, a famous and respected figure in Indian theatre, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the age of 77. He was from Manipur and was one of the most well-known theatre artists in India. He was a key figure in the “theatre of roots” movement that began in the 1970s.

Ratan Thiyam’s plays were unique because he used ancient techniques, stories, and performance styles to tell new and powerful stories on stage. His work helped Indian theatre gain respect and attention across the world.
He served as the Vice Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, and later became the Chairperson of the National School of Drama (NSD)—India’s top theatre training institute. During his leadership, many students learned and admired his deep understanding of theatre, art, and Indian culture.

Many political leaders and artists paid tribute to him. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called Thiyam a “true son of Manipur” and praised his love for Manipuri culture and art. He said Thiyam’s work told the story of Manipur’s soul, struggles, and beauty.

BJP Manipur President A. Sharda Devi also remembered him as a great artist. She said he was the only person from the region to become Director of NSD. He had received many awards for his contribution to theatre, including the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours.
Ratan Thiyam inspired many young artists and helped Indian theatre reach new heights. His plays were not just performances, they were deep, emotional, and thought-provoking experiences. His loss is a huge one, not just for Manipur, but for the entire Indian art world.
