Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar recently shared her experience of returning to the I Know What You Did Last Summer movie series. Fans were shocked when she made a surprise appearance in the latest 2025 movie, even though her character Helen Shivers had died in the original 1997 film.

Sarah spoke about this surprise at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards in Los Angeles. She said she never expected a new film in the series and was surprised when director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson brought her the idea a few years ago. At first, Sarah didn’t think it was possible. “I’m dead,” she had told the director. But Jennifer had a creative plan to bring her back, and Sarah finally agreed.

In the movie, Sarah appears in a scary dream scene of the new character Danica Richards, played by Madelyn Cline. Sarah wears the same crown and dress from her original scene as the “Croaker Queen.” She said it felt “so surreal” to wear the crown again and see a photo of her from the 1997 film next to her now. It brought back many memories.
The dream scene starts beautifully, showing Helen looking graceful. But as the scene goes on, things get darker. Blood runs down her face, and she begins to decompose. The director explained that she wanted the scene to start with beauty and end with horror to surprise the audience.

Sarah had to keep her role a secret before the movie was released. She didn’t talk about it during the film’s premiere, even when her husband and original co-star, Freddie Prinze Jr., gave interviews. She now says she didn’t lie her character is still technically “dead,” just appearing in a dream.
Freddie said he enjoyed keeping the secret and didn’t even tell his friends. He wanted everyone to experience the shock while watching the movie. The new film also stars Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Chase Sui Wonders, and others. Fans of the original movie are excited to see familiar faces returning with a twist.
