Kamal Haasan, a legendary actor known for his powerful performances in films like Vikram and Nayakan, has been invited to join the Actors’ Branch of the Academy. Ayushmann Khurrana, another well-known Bollywood actor famous for movies like Andhadhun and Article 15, has also received an invitation to the same branch.

Payal Kapadia, who made international headlines after winning the Grand Prix at Cannes 2024 for her film All We Imagine as Light, has been invited to join the Writers’ Branch of the Academy. She is also known for her earlier work, A Night of Knowing Nothing.
The Academy shared the news on Thursday night and said that 534 new members from across the world have been invited. These include actors, filmmakers, writers, and technicians. Out of the 534 invitees, 41% are women and 55% are from countries outside the United States. The Academy also added that they are focused on inclusion, representation, and diversity in filmmaking.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang said in a statement, “We are happy to welcome this talented group of individuals. Their work has made a strong impact on the world of movies.”
According to the Academy rules, artists do not apply to become members. Instead, they must be nominated by two current members from the same branch. However, anyone nominated for an Oscar is automatically considered for membership.
This recognition is not just a proud moment for Kamal Haasan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Payal Kapadia, but also for the Indian film industry. It shows how Indian cinema is continuing to grow and gain appreciation on the world stage.
