In 2019, Limp Bizkit’s lead singer Fred Durst surprised everyone by directing a thriller movie called The Fanatic. This film stars John Travolta as a man named Moose, who is deeply obsessed with his favorite actor, Hunter Dunbar, played by Devon Sawa. Moose is shown as a neurodivergent character who crosses the line between fan and stalker. He follows the actor, sneaks into his house, and slowly becomes dangerous. The movie is loosely based on Durst’s real-life experience with a fan who began stalking him.
Fred Durst Directed John Travolta’s Worst Movie
The Fanatic has received a lot of negative reviews. It has a strange tone and many people felt confused about whether the movie was meant to be serious or funny. Travolta’s performance is very extreme. Some viewers found it funny in a “so bad it’s good” way, while others felt it was offensive, especially to those who are on the autism spectrum. The character Moose is portrayed in a way that can be seen as harmful and full of stereotypes.

Travolta might have taken on this role as a tribute to his late son Jett, who was diagnosed with autism. However, many believe that the movie unintentionally sends the wrong message. It shows Moose as violent and unpredictable, which is not true for most people with similar conditions. This has upset some viewers who feel the film does not treat the topic with enough care or understanding.
Fred Durst, although known for music, directed the movie with some skill. However, certain scenes—like one where Limp Bizkit’s music plays while a character talks about loving the band—feel awkward and self-promoting. Overall, The Fanatic became one of Travolta’s worst-reviewed movies, even compared to his earlier flops like Staying Alive.

While The Fanatic had a strong idea at its core, poor execution and mixed messaging made it a film that many people dislike. Some see it as an entertaining mess, but for others, it’s a disappointing and harmful portrayal of mental health and fandom.
