In a lengthy post on Instagram, Anubhav Sinha shared his disappointment over the delay. He raised important questions about casteism in society and why certain uncomfortable truths about caste issues continue to be avoided in public discussions. Sinha highlighted that caste has always existed in Indian society, and it is wrong to ignore it or lie about it. He questioned why the truth about caste, especially in films, is often downplayed or altered. He emphasized that cinema and political speeches should reflect the same reality, as both engage with society in significant ways.

Anubhav Sinha has always been outspoken about issues like caste, identity, and social justice, as seen in his films Article 14, Mulk, and Bheed. His films have often sparked conversations about these uncomfortable topics, and he believes that films like Phule, Santosh, and Dhadak 2 are crucial in raising awareness. Sinha stressed that young people in India should watch such films, even if they may disagree with the content. He explained that these films are not designed to divide people but rather to help society come to terms with its history and work towards unity.

The controversy around Phule began when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) granted the film a “U” certificate, which came with a few changes. The board asked for specific terms like “Mang”, “Mahar”, and “Peshwai” to be removed or altered. Additionally, the line “3,000 saal purani ghulami” (3,000 years of slavery) was modified to “kai saal purani ghulami” (many years of slavery). Director Ananth Mahadevan confirmed that the film makers complied with these changes.

Pratik Gandhi, one of the lead actors in Phule, also addressed the controversy. He appealed to the Brahmin community not to judge the film based on the trailer alone. Pratik said that the trailer does not fully capture the context of the film and urged people to watch the entire movie before forming an opinion. He understood the concerns raised but hoped that the audience would view the film in its entirety and appreciate the message it aims to deliver.

In his post, Anubhav Sinha emphasized the importance of uncomfortable conversations about caste and history. He stated that these issues are not only relevant for today but have been part of Indian society for centuries. The filmmaker concluded by urging society to have these necessary dialogues, as only then can we move forward and address the issues that have been left unresolved for so long.
