You’re Cordially Invited’ Review: Here Come the Brides

Starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon, this romantic comedy tells the story of two families whose weddings are accidentally double-booked at the same idyllic island resort. While the premise is full of comedic potential, the film ultimately falls short of expectations.

You’re Cordially Invited’ Review

Ferrell stars as Jim, a widowed father whose world revolves around his daughter, Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan). When Jenni announces her engagement, Jim sets the date, June 1st, with the hope to relive his own wedding’s joy at the same picturesque island inn. Meanwhile, across the country, successful TV producer Margot (Witherspoon) is planning her sister Neve’s wedding at the same inn, on June 1st.

There’s chaos galore that allows for some comedic mishaps and clashes in culture. Supporting cast talent comes from the likes of Jimmy Tatro, Meredith Hagner, and Leanne Morgan, each bringing their brand of humor to the movie. However, with such a great ensemble, it’s not as if the comedy is really well done-it is forced and somewhat predictable.

Witherspoon does her finest work here: she brings both a fine desperation and controlling tenor to this high-strung Margot; Ferrell just seems, somewhat surprisingly, toned down for himself. Relying more or less entirely upon the tropes of a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy-the meet-cute, then the increasing confusion, followed, finally, by the declaration of love-this somehow feels more schematic than the actual organic result.

The idea is to go for a healthy mix of riotous humor and sentimental sap. Unfortunately, this movie cannot really strike the perfect balance. At times, scenes drag on far too long while at others they feel like a rush job. Overall, given the star cast and the potential premise, “You’re Cordially Invited” does little to make this rom-com not just forgettable but also utterly unamusing.

It might appeal to a passing audience, but those looking for a great experience in a romance comedy may not get enough from it.
