Jesse Eisenberg, known for his roles in The Social Network and Zombieland, recently spoke about how his portrayal of Lex Luthor in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice negatively impacted his career. During an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Eisenberg shared the challenges he faced after the film’s release, despite its commercial success.
Jesse Eisenberg Career Struggles
Jesse Eisenberg played the villainous Lex Luthor in the superhero blockbuster, which grossed $874 million globally. However, the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, and Eisenberg’s performance was particularly criticized. He admitted that the negative reception affected his reputation in the film industry.
“I was in this Batman movie, and the movie was so poorly received,” Eisenberg said. “I’ve never admitted this before, but I genuinely think it hurt my career because it was so public, and my performance was so poorly received.”
Jesse Eisenberg revealed that he felt partially responsible for the backlash. While he enjoyed working on the film, he believes he could have delivered a better performance. “I loved my role and the experience of doing the movie, but I can’t help but feel that I didn’t do my best,” he shared.

He explained that being part of such a high-profile project meant that any criticism would be magnified, making it harder for him to secure other roles in the industry.
Despite the setback, Eisenberg has continued to work on new and creative projects. His latest film, A Real Pain, highlights his talents as a writer, director, and actor. The film, which explores family history and emotional healing through a Holocaust tour in Poland, has already earned four Golden Globe nominations.
Reflecting on the ups and downs of his career, Eisenberg acknowledged the lessons he learned from the experience. While Batman v Superman may have been a challenging chapter, he remains dedicated to pursuing meaningful stories and roles.
