Santosh, a Hindi-language film, has made it to the Oscar 2025 shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category. The film, directed by Sandhya Suri, is an international co-production set in rural northern India. This recognition brings a great sense of pride to the team, especially actor Shahana Goswami.

Shahana shared her excitement on social media, saying that she felt “little glory of recognition” after the film’s nomination. She expressed gratitude towards everyone who supported and voted for Santosh, which is one of 15 films shortlisted out of 85 submissions globally.

Santosh tells the story of a young widow, played by Shahana Goswami, who takes on her late husband’s role as a police constable through a government program. She works alongside a veteran inspector, played by Sunita Rajwar, to investigate a brutal murder involving a Dalit teenage girl. Along the way, Shahana’s character faces challenges, including systemic corruption and gender bias.
The film had its premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where it gained critical acclaim. Santosh was chosen by the United Kingdom as their official entry for the Oscars.
Alongside Santosh, India’s official entry for the Oscars, Laapataa Ladies, was not shortlisted. However, Anuja, a short film produced by Guneet Monga, secured a nomination in the Live-Action Short Film category.
