In a recent conversation, Hollywood actress Meg Ryan opened up about her infamous 2003 interview with BBC’s Michael Parkinson. Known as one of the most awkward interactions on British TV, the interview happened while Ryan was promoting In the Cut, a bold departure from her usual romantic-comedy roles.
Meg Ryan Recalls Awkward Interview
At the time, Meg Ryan was celebrated as America’s sweetheart, with hits like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle making her a household name. But her decision to star in the erotic thriller In the Cut brought criticism from some fans and media. During the interview, Parkinson asked passive-aggressive questions about her role in the film, leading to tense exchanges. When he questioned her choice to appear nude, Ryan gave short answers, clearly uncomfortable with his line of questioning.

When asked how she would handle the situation if she were the interviewer, Meg Ryan tersely replied, “Wrap it up.” Reflecting on the incident, Ryan recently told The Times of London, “I thought it was so bad. I kept waiting for a break because I was going to stand up and leave. But the break never came.”
After the interview, Meg Ryan revealed that she didn’t confront Parkinson, saying, “I didn’t know who that guy was, to begin with, and I don’t have to think about him again.” Despite the unpleasant experience, Parkinson later admitted in 2021 that he regretted the interview, acknowledging it was not his or Ryan’s best moment.
Ryan’s career has been shaped by iconic roles in films written by the late Nora Ephron, including You’ve Got Mail. She fondly recalled Ephron’s advice, saying it often proved right in life and career.
In recent years, Ryan has transitioned to directing. Her 2023 rom-com, What Happens Later, marked her directorial comeback and featured her alongside David Duchovny as former lovers stranded in an airport.
