Elton John, the legendary singer-songwriter, recently opened up about his struggles with a short temper and how his husband, David Furnish, along with therapy and fatherhood, has helped him grow emotionally. In a recent TIME cover story, where John was honored as their “Icon of the Year,” he shared insights about his personal growth journey.
Elton John’s Temper Journey
The 77-year-old artist admitted that he has a short fuse and often loses his temper, especially when he is tired or overwhelmed. Reflecting on his fiery temperament, he explained, “David is very rational, and he’ll try to explain things, but sometimes that makes me even madder.” However, John emphasized that his anger is short-lived and usually fades within minutes.

He acknowledged that his temper stems partly from his childhood experiences. Elton described his upbringing as challenging, with constant conflict between his parents. This left a lasting impact on him, making therapy essential in helping him understand and manage his emotions.
David Furnish, Elton John husband since 2014, has been a stabilizing force in his life. The couple met in 1993, and Furnish helped Elton embrace love and simple joys, such as taking walks together. Furnish also co-directed Elton’s documentary Never Too Late, shedding light on their personal and professional relationship.
Elton John shares two sons, Zachary (13) and Elijah (11), with David. He credits fatherhood with teaching him patience and love in ways he had never experienced before. Unlike his childhood, where fear played a significant role, Elton ensures his children feel loved and supported every day. He stated, “I didn’t want my children to be afraid of me like I was of my parents.”
Despite its challenges, Elton believes his impatience sometimes benefits his creativity. He explained that he works quickly when inspiration strikes and moves on if a song isn’t completed in a short time. This has been a defining trait of his prolific career.
