Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has found himself in the middle of a legal issue related to his film Bholaa. The case has been taken to the Bombay High Court by the makers of the Tamil film Kaithi, raising serious questions about remake rights and payments in the film industry.
Kaithi Makers Claim Rights Violation
The production house behind Kaithi, Dream Warrior Pictures, has alleged that they hold exclusive rights to the original 2019 Tamil film. They claim that an agreement was made for the Hindi remake, which eventually became Bholaa.
However, the main issue raised by the makers is related to payments. They argue that the agreed financial terms were not fully followed. While a part of the payment was made, they claim that the remaining amount, including instalments and revenue-based dues, is still pending.
Why the Legal Dispute Escalated
The disagreement reportedly began when the original producers tried to resolve the matter privately but did not receive a proper response. After repeated attempts, they sent a legal notice demanding the pending payments along with interest.
They also warned that if the terms were not followed, the agreement could be cancelled and the remake rights could go back to them. When no solution was reached, the matter moved to court.
From NCLT to Bombay High Court
Initially, the production house approached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). However, the tribunal rejected the plea, stating that issues related to contracts and intellectual property should be handled by civil courts.
After this, the producers filed a commercial intellectual property case in the Bombay High Court. In their petition, they have requested the court to stop the makers of Bholaa from distributing or streaming the film until the matter is resolved.
They have also asked for compensation and a declaration that the agreement is no longer valid.
Ajay Devgn’s Side and Court Proceedings
On the other side, the defence has reportedly argued that the case should be heard in Chennai, as mentioned in the original agreement. This has created a dispute over which court has the authority to handle the case.

The Bombay High Court has heard arguments from both sides and has kept its decision reserved on the jurisdiction issue. This means the court will announce its decision later.
Impact on Bollywood Remake Rights
This case highlights the importance of proper agreements in the film industry, especially when it comes to remake rights. Many Bollywood films are inspired by or adapted from regional cinema, and such disputes can affect future collaborations.
The outcome of this case could play a key role in how contracts are handled in the future. It may also set an example for filmmakers to ensure clear terms and timely payments to avoid similar legal issues.
